In our Western minds, we like formulas. We like steps. We want predictable.
“Do these four things and _________ will happen”.
“12 step your way to _________.”
“Become __________ with these six revolutionary processes.”
Listen, Jesus doesn’t fit into your test tube. He isn’t to be contained by your formula. And I can tell you after four decades of getting to know Him that He is completely unpredictable. He doesn’t care about efficiency. He doesn’t find joy your productivity. And can I tell you for a fact, He is unimpressed with your accomplishments done in His name. May I save you a few years of futility in figuring out the formula? Do you really want the shortcut? Here it is – in His own words…
“Abide in me…”
Jesus isn’t a consultant. He is the King.
Consultants advise. Kings rule. Let that sink in. How are you approaching Him?
One of favorite singers, Rich Mullins, put it this way:
“Because it is not information that gives us spiritual vitality, it is practice. It is faith. It is the experience of God, not the accumulation of information about God. And subjective religion is a little bit scary, but it should be. Because when we allow ourselves to come into the presence of a God who welcomes us into His presence and yet, at the same time, forbids us to do that – when we come into the presence of God, it’s a frightening thing and it should be.”

Me – So I’ve been at times afraid to approach You because I know you are the King. And at the same time, You invite me to come into your Presence. You’re big, and scary, and uncompromising. You create, you rule but are also full of grace and mercy.
JC – “There are benefits to being an adopted child of the King, my son. But I am still King. – And I’m glad you’re here.”
Me – So…what are we doing today?
JC – How about we celebrate you realizing I’m setting the agenda. That’s a great way to start. After that, today will be filled with glimpses of My Kingdom and of Me. Look for them. You will see.
Agreed. Thank you.
This is a perfect way to start a new week … and there’s a lot to take in especially as I look at an over-filled calendar! It fills my heart with joy to know you’re writing again.
Have a great week! And thank you.
