The characters in this brief but true drama are my youngest Jesse, God, and yours truly.
Jesse: Daddy, I was wondering if we could go to the bank and cash this birthday check.
Me: We are pretty pushed up time-wise son. Did you need money for something?
Jesse: Well, yes sir. I’d like to maybe go to Target shopping – to see if there might be a video game or something.
Me: You should have money that you earned from doing your chores. How much do you have?
Jesse: $1
Me: Um, where’s the money you earned?
Jesse: I gave it away.
Me: You did WHAT?!
Jesse: I gave it away. They were taking up a collection at school to find a cure for leukemia.
Me: Well that’s good. Definitely a worthwhile thing. How much did you donate?
Jesse: $56
Me: HOW MUCH?! Jesse! –
Jesse: They needed it more than me. It’s for a cure!
Me: But son! – (sigh)
{ENTER STAGE LEFT}
God: Allan?
Me: Um…yes?
God: Is there a problem?
Me: Well Jesse and I were talking –
God: Allan?
Me: Yes Lord?
God: It wasn’t your money.
Me: Yeah, I know.
God: It wasn’t his either.
Me: Well, that’s true.
God: Is there a problem?
Me: Well I just wanted him to be practical.
God: Practical? Is that what I’ve shown you? Practical?
Me: Um, no sir.
God: I am anything BUT practical.
Me: Yeah, I know.
God: Apparently you don’t know well enough. Watch and learn, son.
Me: I will…
{EXIT STAGE RIGHT}
Jesse: Daddy, so can we cash the check?
Me: Yeah, we can. And good job son. Well done. Thanks for teaching me something today.
Jesse: {Big smile}
Love it!
Thanks Beth! Hope you are feeling well today.
Bless his big beautiful heart! And bless yours too Daddy, for being willing to change what you have said as a parent authority in response to Your Parent Authority. It is rarer and more humbling than most people think. I have always admired your ability to apologize, even to us kids, when you realize that God might be doing something in our lives. Something even bigger than your desire to guide and protect us.
Thank you Gracie girl. Not sure quite what to say other than I hope He helps me keep my heart as “good soil” where things can grow.
